In 2003, as part of the arts and cultural inventory of Waldo County that produced this website and printed guide, an important part of our cultural heritage was captured in a series of interviews conducted by Jeff "Smokey" McKeen, a folklorist and Peggy McKenna, a photographer from Montville. Together, they collected the personal stories of a dozen or so of the county's older residents who are our links to our past. These people have priceless and often undocumented stories to share about the lifestyles that were once prominent in Waldo County. Some of them worked in professions that no longer exist in this area or that are quickly disappearing; some possess craft skills that will be lost when they die; some know of local traditions that have disappeared with time. All have valuable stories to tell. The stories and photographs collected by Smokey and Peggy are even more poignant now that some of these inspirational and endearing community members are no longer with us including Mildred Pottle, Red Mitchell, Leland Sherman and Alva Philbrook. We are pleased to be able to share these stories with our community, and to honor the individuals who have shared their histories with us. We also hope to raise funds to develop a traveling exhibit of these stories and photographs for county schools, fairs and museums to display these oral and visual snapshots of our heritage. If you know of any potential sources of funding for such an exhibit, we would love to hear from you. Thank you.
